The Lamborghini Gallardo (/ɡaɪˈjɑrdoʊ/; Italian: [ɡaʎˈʎardo]) is a sports car built by Lamborghini from 2003 to 2013. It is Lamborghini's best-selling model with 14,022 being built throughout its lifetime. Named after a famous breed of fighting bull, the V-10 Gallardo has been Lamborghini's sales leader and stable-mate to a succession of V-12 flagship models—first to the Lamborghini Murciélago (4,099 built between 2001 and 2011), then to the current flagship Lamborghini Aventador. On November 25, 2013, the last Gallardo was rolled off the production line.
This was an incredibly tricky car for me to photograph. With the highly reflective black paint job, and shooting in the evening, I had several problems to overcome with reflections and really deep shadows to deal with. In the end I simply used one camera "locked off" on a tripod, and Profoto B1 units to light the car. I decided that by lighting specific areas of the car that needed accentuating, I would have more flexibility and control over the final result. With this approach in mind I used remote triggers to trip the camera shutter as I walked around the car with hand held the B1's. For certain areas of the car, I decided to use a large studio boom overhead, outfitted with a Chimera strip box to add some highlights to the hood, mirrors, and shoulder areas of the car. I think it worked out quite well, and I hope you enjoy looking at this amazing machine as much as I like creating this image!! Hopefully next time I get to drive this bad boy!!
